The MLS Coach Rate my Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate my Team Surgeries. These articles will look at the initial MLS Fantasy squads and will be published ahead of Game week 4, I will be putting forward my team selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other MLS Fantasy managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial MLS Fantasy squad.

My Team:

Robles (RBNY), Diop (LAG)

Perrinelle (RBNY), Wingert (RSL), Farrell (NER), Zizzo (RBNY), Beltran (RSL)

Nguyen (NER), Fagundez (NER), Valeri (POR), Olum (POR), Azira (COR)

O. Kamara (COL), Adi (POR), Jahn (COL)

Team cost $100.0m

KEY ISSUES:

Fixtures:

The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. Especially, this week, it being a Bye week (BGW). Luis Robles gets the nod in goal for this week, as New York Red Bulls host Real Salt Lake.

Following on with the New York Red Bulls theme, for the same reasons, I have put Sal Zizzo and Damien Perrinelle in my back-line for this weekend.

Portland Timbers are another side with a favourable fixture this weekend against Columbus Crew, thus I have put two Heavy-Hitters from the Timbers in my lineup, Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi.
Valeri is priced at $10.3m and is currently in good form and more importantly plays this weekend. Fanendo Adi is priced at $9.6m and is in good early season form, that's why I've doubled up on Portland.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on New England Revolution too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Portland Timber’s excellent early fixtures?

Value:

Value this week is coming from the defence. I have Real Salt Lake defender's in my lineup to save on money and allow me to get in some Heavy Hitters. That looks too good to turn down. Chris Wingert at $4.4m and Sal Zizzo at $4.7m are the two players and differentials that are saving me money this week for upgrades elsewhere. Both steals if you ask me. Lawrence Olum and Adam Jahn are going to be two bench-sitters and will come off the bench if needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best midfielders? Have I got the right defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Captain:

Finally, I have invested heavily in ensuring, that I have three great captaincy options for this weekend. Lee Nguyen at $9.6m, Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi who I mentioned before. All three can be taken out next week, as the teams that do not play this weekend come back from Internationals.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband?
